Lou Congelio

Husband. Father. Ad guy.

Well, folks, it seems my last campaign has wrapped, my final deadline has passed, and the client—well, the Big One upstairs—has approved my exit. I’m Lou Congelio and, if you’re reading this, I’ve gone off to the great creative department in the sky. But don’t cry; this isn’t a sob story. Think of it as a fond farewell from a guy who had one hell of a ride—and maybe a laugh or two along the way.

For over four decades, I was privileged to work in an industry that encouraged me to be creative every single day working alongside some of the most amazing talent in the world. Most of them living right here in Houston.

From Coca-Cola and EXXON to Six Flags and Buc-ee’s, I had the joy of crafting ads for some of the most iconic brands in America. Along the way, I wore many hats: writer, producer, creative director, owner, and yes, award-winner. That Silver Medal from the AAF? Pretty sweet, but nothing beats the thrill of a campaign that made people smile, think, and react.

As Chairman of the American Advertising Federation – Houston (AAF-Houston), I worked to unite the local ad scene, making it more relevant and beneficial for its members. It was my honor to bring advertising legends like George Lois and Sally Hogshead to speak at our luncheons—what a thrill! And with undertakings like Only in Houston, I proudly celebrated and promoted the incredible talent that thrives in our city.

Family, though, was my greatest inspiration. My parents, Frank and Theresé Congelio, my brother Mark, and my nephew Jonathan all went ahead of me, and I miss them deeply. Their love and example shaped the man I became.

I’m survived by my incredible son, Elijah, who taught me more about courage and resilience than I ever could have imagined. Elijah, you are my greatest pride, and your strength is a legacy that will endure forever.

To my ex-wife, Rie, I thank you for being my best friend, devoted partner and loving supporter for all these years. Together, we shared a life of joy and abundance, discovery and new challenges. My favorite memory of you is feeding the pigeons at Trafalgar Square on our honeymoon in London. The joy on your face was timeless!

And to my siblings—Frank Jr., Noel Paull, and Linda Sinchak—you were my partners in crime, my sounding boards, and my lifelong cheerleaders. You filled my life with laughter, love, and unforgettable memories. I hope I gave you just as much joy as you gave me.

I would like to give a shout out to the many friends who were there for me when I needed them most: Joe Skelly, David and Zach Paull, Jerry “Bird” Moher, Steve Salata, Kim White, Lee Wheat, Christine Scott, Jim Conlan, Mark Hayden, Brandon Ray, and my biggest hero, NF Fighter Reggie Bibbs.

As for my send-off, I’m keeping it simple. I’ll be cremated and scattered to the winds, making it impossible for my enemies to find me. But if you want to honor my memory, head down to PJ’s Sports Bar on West Gray, order an ice-cold Shiner Bock for me, and watch the Astros knock it out of the park.

Life is too short to live small, my friends. Keep dreaming big, laughing hard, and living boldly. That’s how I’d want it. See you on the other side.
